Using the atlas
You may use planetatlas.org and the app for anything you like, including teaching, coursework, research and commercial work. No permission is needed and no attribution is required, though it is always welcome.
Please do not scrape the tile services through this interface. The imagery comes from NASA, JAXA, CNSA, ESA and USGS archives that serve it directly to your browser; bulk downloading through the atlas puts load on public infrastructure that is not ours to spend. Those archives publish their own bulk-access routes, and they are better than anything you could get this way.
The imagery is not ours
Every map in this atlas comes from a public planetary archive. Most of it is US Government work in the public domain; some is published by other agencies under their own terms. Each layer names its source and instrument in the Sources panel, and those terms govern the imagery itself. What we claim is the atlas around it: the software, the interface and the arrangement.
Subscriptions in the mobile app
- What is free. The solar-system view, the whole of the Moon — 93 imagery layers, 9,131 named features, 36 landing sites — and the classroom activities. No trial period, no expiry.
- What the subscription unlocks. The other thirteen worlds and the measuring tools.
- Price. US$1.99 per month, or US$19.99 per year. A one-off lifetime unlock is also offered. Prices in other currencies are set by Apple and Google for your region and are shown in the app before you buy.
- Automatic renewal. Monthly and yearly subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless cancelled at least 24 hours before it ends. Your store account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the period ending. The lifetime unlock does not renew and is charged once.
- Cancelling. Cancel any time in your store account settings — Settings → your name → Subscriptions on iOS, or Play Store → Subscriptions on Android. Cancelling stops the next renewal; access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for. Cancellation cannot be done by us, only by you through the store.
- Refunds. Refunds are handled by Apple and Google under their own policies, not by us. Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com. Google: Play Store → Order history. If a refund is refused and you think it should not have been, write to us and we will do what we can.
- Restoring. "Restore purchases" on the subscription screen re-checks your store account, which is how a subscription follows you to a new device or a reinstall.
Availability
The atlas draws its imagery live from public agency archives. When one of those archives is slow, changes a URL or goes down for maintenance, part of the atlas will not load, and there is nothing we can do about it from here except fix our end once we notice. A subscription buys access to the app's features, not a guarantee that a third party's servers are up.
The software is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. The measurements it produces are good enough to teach with and are not survey-grade; do not use them where being wrong matters.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the date at the top of this page changes with them. A price change never applies to a period you have already paid for, and both stores require your explicit consent before charging a subscription at a higher price.
